HALLMARKING POLICY

1. Purpose of This Policy

This policy explains how De Vere Brilliance Limited (Trading as De Vere Brilliance) complies with the UK Hallmarking Act 1973 and ensures that all precious metal jewellery we sell is correctly tested, marked, and described.

We are committed to full transparency and compliance to protect consumers, uphold trade integrity, and meet our legal obligations.

2. What is Hallmarking?

2.1 Hallmarking is the independent verification of the precious metal content of an item of jewellery or watch.
2.2 A hallmark is a set of marks applied by an official UK Assay Office confirming that the item meets the stated standard of fineness.
2.3 Hallmarking is required by law in the UK for all precious metals above statutory minimum weights.

3. Statutory Minimum Weights

By law, the following articles must be hallmarked before sale if they exceed these weights:

  • Gold – over 1 gram

  • Silver – over 7.78 grams

  • Platinum – over 0.5 grams

  • Palladium – over 1 gram

Items below these thresholds may be described as precious metal without hallmarking, but De Vere Brilliance Limited (Trading as De Vere Brilliance) applies hallmarking wherever possible for consumer confidence.

4. Our Hallmarking Commitment

4.1 All eligible jewellery sold by us is hallmarked by an authorised UK Assay Office (London, Birmingham, Sheffield, or Edinburgh).
4.2 Each hallmark applied to our jewellery includes:

  • The sponsor’s mark (De Vere Brilliance Limited (Trading as De Vere Brilliance) registered responsibility mark).

  • The metal fineness mark (e.g., 750 for 18ct gold, 950 for platinum).

  • The Assay Office mark (identifying where the item was tested).

  • (Optional) The date letter mark.

4.3 We never describe, market, or sell an item as gold, silver, platinum, or palladium unless it bears the legally required hallmark.

5. Descriptions & Marketing

5.1 All product descriptions on our website and in marketing materials accurately reflect the hallmarked fineness of the metal.
5.2 We never use ambiguous or misleading terms such as “gold-plated” or “vermeil” without full clarification.
5.3 Where applicable, we clearly distinguish between solid, plated, and filled metals.

6. Exemptions & Lightweight Items

6.1 Articles below the statutory minimum weight may legally be sold without a hallmark.
6.2 However, we will always disclose whether such items are:

  • Hallmarked voluntarily, or

  • Exempt from hallmarking due to weight.

7. International Sales

7.1 For customers outside the UK, our jewellery carries UK hallmarks recognised under the Vienna Convention on the Control of Precious Metal Articles, which includes over 20 member countries.
7.2 Where UK hallmarks are not legally recognised abroad, we make clear that the hallmark certifies compliance with UK law.

8. Enforcement & Compliance

8.1 We are registered with a UK Assay Office and maintain a Sponsor’s Mark.
8.2 We cooperate fully with Trading Standards and Assay Office inspections.
8.3 Staff are trained in hallmarking law to ensure compliance in product descriptions and customer communications.

9. Consumer Rights & Reassurance

9.1 Customers purchasing from us can request an explanation of their jewellery’s hallmark.
9.2 Hallmarking provides assurance of quality, value, and compliance with legal standards.

10. Misrepresentation of Metals

10.1 It is a criminal offence to misdescribe or falsely mark jewellery.
10.2 We operate a zero-tolerance approach and carry out supply chain checks to ensure that all metals are correctly described and assayed.

11. Policy Review

This policy is reviewed annually, or sooner if changes occur in law or regulatory guidance.
