HALLMARKING AT DE VERE BRILLIANCE

What is a hallmark?

A hallmark is an official mark stamped on precious metal jewellery that confirms its authenticity and purity. It is applied only after the metal has been independently tested by a UK Assay Office.

In the UK, hallmarking is a legal requirement under the Hallmarking Act 1973 for:

  • Gold items weighing more than 1g

  • Silver items weighing more than 7.78g

  • Platinum items weighing more than 0.5g

  • Palladium items weighing more than 1g

This means you can be certain the jewellery you purchase from us contains the exact purity of precious metal that we describe.

What does a hallmark look like?

A UK hallmark is made up of a series of marks, which may include:

  • Sponsor’s Mark – identifies De Vere Brilliance as the company responsible for sending the item for hallmarking.

  • Metal & Fineness Mark – shows the type of precious metal and its purity (e.g., 750 = 18ct gold, 950 = platinum).

  • Assay Office Mark – tells you which Assay Office tested and marked the piece (London, Birmingham, Sheffield, or Edinburgh).

  • (Optional) Date Letter – the year the piece was hallmarked.

The Dealer’s Notice

UK law requires every jeweller to display the official Dealer’s Notice explaining hallmarking.

This notice explains what each part of the hallmark means and how you can read it.

Why is hallmarking important?

Trust – You know exactly what you are buying.

Legal protection – It is illegal to sell unhallmarked jewellery above the legal weight thresholds.

Value assurance – Hallmarks give confidence if you insure, resell, or pass your jewellery on.

Transparency – Your piece has been independently tested, not just described by us.

Where to find your hallmark

Hallmarks are usually stamped in discreet places such as the inside of a ring band, the clasp of a necklace, or the reverse of a pendant.
